How to Find a Reading Tutor
If your child is struggling with reading, you’ve probably already spent late nights Googling, asking friends, and scrolling through local Facebook groups trying to find the right tutor. You may have even found a few directories, only to realize the directory only gives a small amount of information about the individual. It can feel impossible to know who’s truly qualified to help and who just “likes working with kids.”
I know that feeling. I’ve seen it again and again. As a Certified Orton-Gillingham Reading Specialist and former Language-Based Special Educator, I’ve worked with so many families who were eager to help their child but didn’t know where to start.
In all the Reading Facebook groups, I kept seeing the same type of question pop up over and over again. It always looked something like this:
“Does anyone know any tutors who use Wilson Reading, are certified in OG, and teach in-person near Bethesda, Maryland?”
Parents aren’t just looking for any tutor. They’re searching for someone with very specific training and experience, often in a specific city, and sometimes virtual or in-person.
That’s when it clicked for me: there needed to be a simple, all-in-one place where parents could find the exact kind of tutor their child needed … without the endless scrolling and guesswork.
So, together with my husband Michael, a software entrepreneur and fellow parent, we created The Reading Tutor Hub: a free, easy-to-use directory that helps families quickly find Reading Tutors who meet any unique variety of qualifications.
Meet The Reading Tutor Hub
The Reading Tutor Hub takes the struggle out of finding reading help. It’s a free online resource where you can:
- Search for certified tutors trained in evidence-based methods.
- Filter by location, certification, program, and availability, whether you prefer in-person or online sessions.
- Learn about each tutor’s background through detailed bios written by the tutors themselves.
- Reach out directly to connect, ask questions, and find the right fit for your child.
You can explore it yourself at tutorhub.codyreading.com.
How to Use The Reading Tutor Hub (Step-by-Step)
Finding a reading tutor shouldn’t feel like a full-time job. Here’s exactly how to use the Hub to make it simple and stress-free:
Step 1: Visit the Hub
Head to tutorhub.codyreading.com. You’ll see an easy-to-use search bar and filters designed just for families like yours.
Step 2: Filter by What You Need
- Most Use the filters to find tutors who fit your child’s specific needs.
- Choose tutors with the certifications or programs you prefer (for example, Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, or Barton).
- Narrow by location and format, whether you want someone nearby or a virtual option that fits your schedule.
Step 3: Explore Tutor Profiles
Click on the names of tutors who seem like a good fit. Some profiles include deeper bios or links to their personal websites, where you can learn more about their background, approach, and experience.
Step 4: Reach Out
If you’d like to connect, click the envelope icon to send a direct note to the tutor. Some profiles also include a website link to further explore their services (click the “globe” icon). When reaching out, introduce yourself, share a bit about your child’s needs, and ask about next steps. Ideally, set up a conversation to vet further!
Important Note: The Reading Tutor Hub does not vet specialists on your behalf. Just like hiring any professional, it’s important to do your own homework before entrusting someone with your child’s instruction. (We can share another article soon on how to vet reading tutors effectively.)
Pro Tip: When vetting a tutor, make sure to understand their credentials. Not all “certifications” are created equally. For example, if a tutor says they’re “Orton-Gillingham” certified, make sure to ask where they obtained their certification and how many hours of training were required (if this is important to you).
Who the Hub Is For
- Parents of struggling readers who need specific instruction
- Families navigating dyslexia evaluations or early interventions
- Parents homeschooling their child who want extra support
- Tutor & Learning Centers looking to add to their teams
